Star Powerhouse

As a young entertainment writer, I have encountered a lot of feedback and suggestions from the moviegoers whenever we released an article about a specific movie or published a specific topic about films. Recently, the local Filipino film industry experienced a lot of challenges when it comes to ticket sales and the taste of the moviegoers when it comes to the genres that has been released by big film outfits. According to the netizens they would want to see a different genre of movie, not just the typical drama, love story, action, indie or horror story. 

To be honest, I don't know until now, how to start this review. Since I have encountered the same situation in the past. Falling in love with a thespian, model, news anchor, someone famous what have you, name it; it is really hard at this point to believe that people within the same industry would not hurt you the same way as the people from the pass did. That was the doubt that Anna Elizabeth Villegas (played by Jessy Mediola) used to have in the movie.

The movie, "ML" has been carefully crafted to narrate the truth in the history. It tells the side of the story and the factors that made the time of Martial Law as a dark era of our nation. Without being bias or partisan, the narrative of the movie explains the weight and the participation of everyone regarding the current situation of our country.  

A young couple in the island of Guimaras faces the challenge of a forthcoming separation. Few days before Samuel leaves Aileen for a better job opportunity in a distant city, the latter, feeling immensely desperate, tries to stop him from leaving.

It is indeed a good start for Wilbros Films as they open the premiere night for Nakalimutan Ko Nang Kalimutan Ka. The movie could be the "Hugot Film of the Year" as the story revolves on the bitterness of Jaz Cruz played by the multi-talented Alex Gonzaga. The plot of the movie is deep yet simple and not complicated, a movie that everyone could relate with.

T-Rex Entertainment, the producer of the hit movies “Patay Na si Hesus,” “Deadma Walking,” and “Bakwit Boys” unveils the teaser trailer of its newest production, “Class of 2018.” The teaser can be seen on the T-Rex Entertainment Facebook page.

Janella Salvador and Jameson Blake agree in saying that their team-up in the upcoming movie, So Connected, is significant for both of them. For one, this is their first time to work together. “Deadma Walking,” a comedy-drama-musical about two gay best friends staging a fake wake, death, and funeral, has been selected as an entry in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. It will open in Philippine theaters on December 25 together with the seven other entries.

KDrama fans are in for a welcome treat as they will surely fall in love with this first Filipino-Korean romance drama in the mainstream movie scene which stars two Korean actors and Kapamilya leading lady Devon Seron.

The 6th Edition of the CineSB independent Film Festival shall be held from 18 to 29 July 2016 at the DLS – CSB School of Design and Arts Building. Cinesb is a fast-rising collegiate independent film festival in the Philippines show-casing the best efforts of Benildean students. It has grown to highlight the finest indie works from the regions as well as other schools.  It also aims to exhibit several film competitions and festival that encourages young filmmakers across the Philippines to explore their unique ideas and fresh perspectives through the creative world of filmmaking. Cinesb promotes the Filipino experience exercising the filmmakers’ wholeness and imaginative aesthetics.

Last May 5, I was invited for the private screening of the movie “My Candidate” staring Derek Ramsay, Shaina Magdayao and Iza Calzado. The movie is directed by Quark Henares produced by Quantum Films, MJM Productions, Tuko Film Production and Buchi Boy Films.

Its timing is perfect as it opens shortly before the Philippine national elections.

Lakbay2Love is an advocacy film that is far from the usual on-top-of-our-heads kind of films that might sound preachy; this one is made personal. With romance as a jump-off point to tell a story of one’s struggles and emotional baggage, delivering a clear advocacy for environmental awareness and biking as a community than just a hobby, while falling in love with nature, Lakbay2Love surely hit the criteria for a feel-good movie that Filipinos go gaga for lately. What is interesting is that, this feel-good movie made the audience immerse in the world of nature and biking with the all-time favorite spice of romance. This is a feature film of Love – for nature, for the other, for oneself and for family.

Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery) will be 8-hours long and will have its world premiere on February 18 at theBerlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2016. Described as “a marriage of history, literature and mythology,” the film’s drumbeaters say “Hele” is about the history of Filipinos that interconnects narrative threads on the Philippine Revolution of 1896-1897 against the Spanish colonizers.
