A Double Feature of Faith and Film

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), in collaboration with the Film Development Council of the Philippines , The Metropolitan Theater , and ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project Sagip Pelikula , presented “Himala” back-to-back with “Isang Himala” as part of “Mga Hiyas ng Sineng Filipino” and in celebration of National Women’s Month. The morning program screened the restored black and white version of “Himala,” a cinematic masterpiece created by three eventual National Artists: director Ishmael Bernal , writer Ricky Lee , and actress Nora Aunor . This marked the first public showing of the restored B&W version. “Himala” is widely recognized as a cornerstone of Philippine cinematic history. The film stars Aunor as Elsa, a young woman in a poor, drought-stricken, and isolated town whose life takes a dramatic turn after an apparition of the Virgin Mary, triggering mass hysteria in Barrio Cupang. The film received numerous awards, notably an almost clean sweep at th...

Nakalimutan Ko Nang Kalimutan Ka - This could be the "Best Hugot Film" of the year?

"Siguro ano po kinakalimitan hanggang sa dulo makalimutan mo na. Meron akong paniniwala sometimes you have to fake it until you make it. Iko-convinced mo yung sarili mo na masaya ka, iko-convinced mo yung sarili mo na nakalimutan mo na siya kahit hindi pa. Lagi mong reremind yung sarili mo move on, move on maging masya, kalimutan mo na. Tapos one day gigising ka, hindi mo na kailangan mageffort kasi totally nakalimutan mo na, wala ka nang feeling."

Movie Review : UNEXPECTEDLY YOURS (Cathy Garcia-Molina, 2017)

I think I just had a Classic Pare Titos and Titas of Manila moment while watching this movie since I couldn’t help myself from twitterpating (kilig lang yan, inartehan ko) over such a cute couple. Nope, not talking about JoshLia (even if Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto were also really charming here).

Movie Review : Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets/Film synopsis In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe. My notes on Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: 1. I remember watching the execrable Jupiter Ascending and wishing that it was a ride in Enchanted Kingdom's Rialto instead. I had the exact same feeling with this newest flick by Luc Besson, something that I should probably have seen in 3D/4DX.

Film Review : KITA KITA

Starring Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez under the direction of Sigrid Andrea Bernardo My notes on Kita Kita: 1. Where do we draw the line between persistence and obsession? Do we consider a grand gesture like asking someone out for a coffee date via a huge billboard in Morayta sweet or repulsive? If Xian Gaza actually looked like Daniel Matsunaga, would he still be considered a creepy stalker or just a determined romantic? 2. One of my biggest concerns with this movie was that after it made us fall in love with its unconventional lovers, it tried to sell us this disturbing (and Machiavellian?) big reveal that nothing was actually wrong with the couple's predator-prey relationship history (I felt the exact same way when Maricel Soriano fell in love with her rapist in Dahas, but then that wasn't even close to being a romantic-comedy). He knowingly took advantage of her disability, period.

Film Review : Hacksaw Ridge

Hacksaw Ridge is a biographical war drama film about the World War II experiences of Desmond Doss, an American pacificist combat medic who was a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, refusing to carry or use a firearm or weapons of any kind. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa.

Film Review : Kristo

Kristo (Hf Yambao) A man suddenly faces an assortment of personal struggles – ironically, in the midst of a family milestone. In this hard-hitting drama, he will fight to protect his livelihood, maintain his honor as a family man, and, eventually, save his own life. Ultimately, Kristo poses the question: In the game of life, who wins and who loses?

Mulat: A Revelation in Form and Content

Of all the triumphs going for Diane Ventura’s first feature-length film, Mulat (Awaken), its genre-bending narrative style and the ace performances of its actors perhaps take the cake. Chief in this long list are its two lead actors—Jake Cuenca (who plays the morose Jake) and Ryan Eigenmann (who is dynamite as Vince)—both of whom effectively quash any preconceived notions viewers may have of their abilities due to their notoriety in more mass-leaning vehicles.

MS. BELLA FLORES has joined our Creator at the age of 84.

Medina Dancel in real life, Ms Bella was born February 27, 1929, is a FAMAS award-winning Filipino film actress. She is best known for her "iconic" portrayals of film villains for many years. Bella Flores was born in Manila. She was a college sophomore at the Far Eastern University when she appeared in her first film, “Tatlong Balaraw” (1950), at age 14. Flores was signed by Sampaguita Pictures. She was cast in Roberta as the cruel stepmother of Tessie Agana's titular character, despite her being all of 15 years old. The film was a box-office success, credited with saving Sampaguita Pictures from bankruptcy after a fire had destroyed its studio. The film's success also elevated Flores into the upper tier of stars, and typecast her in villainous roles. The film critic Nestor Torre remarked that Flores had "been making life miserable for many generations of hapless stars—all the way back to little Tessie Agana and Boy Alano in 'Roberta' in the early 1950s...
