Catch cinematic spectacles at Shang Red Carpet Cinemas this November

Add a bit of whimsy and fantasy as the magic of the holidays ramps up this November. Shangri-La Plaza has assembled a stellar lineup of genre films screening at the Red Carpet Cinemas all month long.

Studio Ghibli Weekend arrives at the Shang Red Carpet on November 16 to 17. The festival presents six of legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s celebrated films including NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and Castle in the Sky (1986) on November 16; and My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008), and Spirited Away (2001) on November 17.

Shangri-La Plaza partnered with The Japan Foundation, and the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation to mark Hayao’s recent honor as a recipient of the 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Award for using animation “to explore complex human issues, inspiring audiences with thought-provoking films that champion nature, peace, and humanity.”

Up next, meet the magical students of Shiz University and the iconic characters of Land of Oz as the film adaptation of the beloved and enduring musical Wicked makes its Philippine premiere on November 20

The epic musical stars Cynthia Erivo as misunderstood, green-skinned Elphaba and Ariana Grande as popular and privileged Galinda. Also featuring Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage, the story sees these women forge an unlikely but profound friendship and ultimately fulfill their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The first release of a two-part film, Wicked includes the genre-defining showstopper Defying Gravity and bubbly hit Popular, making it a spectacular cinematic event this holiday season.

Brush up your wayfinding skills as Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) and demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) reunite for Moana 2 opening on November 27. Set three years after the events in the first film, the duo and their wild crew of seafarers go into the far seas of Oceania to break the curse of the god Nalo on the hidden island of Motufetu.

On November 29 and 30 Shang trains the spotlight on the country’s own aspiring and professional Filipino animators by hosting the 2024 edition of Animahenasyon 18: The 2024 Philippine Animation Festival with the Animation Council of the Philippines.

The annual festival is showcasing this year’s lineup of finalists including Kampana and Aiayai both by Mark Mendoza from the boutique animation studio Friendly Foes and Daisy from picture book imagineer Pepot Atienza. Animahenasyon 18 is also featuring creations by young animators from Xavier University Senior High School, iAcademy, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

Shangri-La Plaza is rolling out the Red Carpet for enthusiasts of world cinema with an inspired roster of fantasy films this November.

Film Review : Just The 3 Of Us

My notes on Just The 3 Of Us: 1. The movie reminded me so much of this late 90's rom-com with Matthew Perry as a happy-go-lucky bachelor who had a one night stand with a sultry Salma Hayek in Vegas. She ended up pregnant, they got married, and then discovered each other's personalities while fixing family and work issues. It was called Fools Rush In and I would have asked you to rent it in a local Video City, but I think all of their stores closed ages ago. 2. In this version though, the girl CJ (Jennylyn Mercado) would rather stalk the potential father and be the emotional punching bag of Uno (John Lloyd Cruz) who had a bad temper (F-words everywhere!), an a-hole attitude ("So what? Buhay ko 'to. Kahit mag-swimming ako sa alak wala ka pakialam!"), crazy reasoning (he wanted to take care of CJ and the baby, but made her sleep on an uncomfortable sofa bed in the living room with poor ventilation), and a drinking problem that were all supposedly reasonab...
