Reflection and continuity in ‘Estuario’ exhibit at UE CFAD

In line with the celebration of the 80th founding anniversary of the University of the East, the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design recently launched a unique journey into history, art, and memory through their annual art exhibition entitled “Estuario: Sining na dumadaloy, Diwang nagtatagpo, Kuwentong Nagpapatuloy” (Estuary: Flowing Art, Converging Minds, Continuing Stories).

The word “estuario,” derived from the Latin word “aestuarium,” refers to a place where freshwater from rivers and saltwater from the sea meet and mix. In the context of the exhibition at the Chua King Ha Galleries on the 5th floor Tan Yan Kee Academic Building at UE Caloocan, this metaphor symbolizes the convergence of generations, traditions, and creative visions.

UE CFAD, like a living ecosystem, bridges academia and the community, where students, faculty, alumni, and various disciplines merge to create a more vibrant channel of culture.

Housed in the Mezzanine Gallery are important materials reflecting the history of the university. Featured here are archival documents, posters from past exhibitions, books, catalogs, memorabilia, and artworks from different eras. One of the most significant pieces on display is a copy of The Daily Mirror published on January 25, 1951, which contains a report regarding the formal inauguration of the University of the East and the appointment of Dr. Francisco T. Dalupan as its first president.

Also included in the exhibit is the official portrait painting of Dr. Dalupan created by artist Joey C. Mariano. The painting was commissioned and donated to UE CFAD by the CFA Advertising Arts Graduates Batch 2006 as a tribute to one of the main pillars of UE.

“Estuario” is not merely a simple commemoration of the past, but also a testament to the vitality of the current art community at UE. The exhibit features works and contributions from students, faculty, and renowned alumni who continue to leave their mark in the field of art.

Among the participating alumni are Fernando Antimano, Sayid Cedicol, Horhe “Enteng” Corong, Arturo Dondoyano, Jim Carl C. Echas, Honesto “Estong” Guiruela III, Edralin Manila, Leonardo Manto III, Villa Rica Manuel, Joey Mariano, RV Cyrille Mero, Ely Mesa Jr., Jayson Pettz Muring, Jefrey B. Sambahon, Kristoffer Tolentino, and Bryan Yabut.

Through these artworks, it is proven that culture is not a static entity, but a continuous flow that shapes every generation.

The exhibition is open to the public at the Chua King Ha Galleries until October 25, 2026. For those who wish to visit and take part in this celebration, contact cfad.cal@ue.edu.ph.
