‘Bloom Where You Are Planted’ wins 4 major awards at 49th Gawad Urian

The film “Bloom Where You Are Planted” bagged four top honors at the 49th Gawad Urian awarding ceremony held last October 8 at the Yuchengco Auditorium of De La Salle University.

Presented by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the full-length feature took home Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Direction for Noni Abao, and Best Editing for Che Tagyamon.

The victory builds upon the documentary’s earlier acclaim at the 21st Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, where it won Best Full-Length Film and Best Editing last year.

“Bloom Where You Are Planted,” produced by Alex Poblete and Taripnong Cagayan Valley, chronicles the systemic oppression, displacement, red-tagging, and extrajudicial atrocities faced by land defenders and community organizers in the Cagayan Valley region.

Rather than relying on sensationalism or manipulated sentimentality, Abao’s direction captures the lives of grassroots figures with a restrained, meditative cadence.

The documentary follows the journeys of three prominent activists: Agnes Mesina, Amanda Echanis, and Randy Malayao, whose story was reflected upon by his close friend, veteran journalist Raymund Villanueva.

The film contrasts their struggles against the landscapes of Northern Luzon, juxtaposing the region’s rich natural resources with the harsh realities of land grabbing, mining, militarization, and agricultural displacement.

Through Tagyamon’s editing, the narrative weaves personal testimonies together with broader systemic issues, framing activism not as an act of violence, but as a courageous stand for social justice.

Abao dedicated the film’s success to the targeted activists and community members whose stories it carries, emphasizing that the honor belongs to those who continue to resist state repression across the country.

Veteran filmmaker and actress Laurice Guillen was honored with the “Natatanging Gawad Urian” Lifetime Achievement Award for her decades-long contributions to Philippine cinema.

The Manunuri, partnering with DLSU and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, also recognized exceptional craftsmanship across several other feature and short films.

The historical film “Quezon” picked up Best Production Design for Monica Sebial, Best Cinematography for Pong Ignacio, Best Music for Jerrold Tarog, and Best Actor for Jericho Rosales in a tie with Carlo Aquino for “Bar Boys: After School.”

Maris Racal and Odette Khan also shared the Best Actress recognition for “Sunshine” and “Bar Boys: After School,” respectively. Jennica Garcia received the Best Supporting Actress trophy for “Sunshine” while Will Ashley got the Best Supporting Actor award for “Bar Boys.”

Renei Dimla won Best Screenplay for “Republika ng Pipolipinas,” Emilio Bien Sparks took home Best Sound for “Cinemartyrs,” and Justine Borlagdan earned Best Short Film for “Cemento.”

By bringing rural realities to national attention, Abao's documentary stands as both a critical piece of cinema and a historical record of community resilience in the face of adversity.
