A tribute to imperfect families, a light comedy that represents a slice of life of a not so regular family going through some challenges but truly relatable to all.
The story line of Father’s Day revolves around Henry Willows. a lonely father for a long time that get used of being alone. Because of it or being bitter to his past he has this wall to protecting him. On a one winter evening, his son Mathews comes back for a unexpected visit who happens to bring also his pregnant 16 year old goth girlfriend where, his mother Sue doesn’t approved of. Mathew runs to his dad longing for approval. Out of the blue Sue, appears in the scene looking for his son Mathew. There the two divorced couple reunited bringing back their past filled with no holds barred dialogue and savage words. There with their delinquent son, they rediscover their love to each other.
Directed by Baby Barredo, a light family drama, comedy full of surprises and humor revolves around the play. The British theme stage is designed and created by Miguel Faustmann. He as one lead cast of the play astonishingly set the symbolic elements of their plays, more importantly to underpin the theme that they are trying to express to their audience.
Miguel Faustmann as Henry Willows plays perfectly the role of a lonely retired father living in his dream pension house with only a fish to talk to. He was also able to address the feelings and attitudes of being bitter alone for a long time knowing every small detail of his house. I do somehow relate and felt the sadness of Henry in having a fail relationship. Maybe for reasons of after investing, pouring all the effort and time, all of this will fall in a divorce. Though It does not mention in the play clearly how a seemingly happy unperfect family fall apart. Comedy harsh fatherly dialects thrown in a British way metaphor added the sauce in the play. I suddenly remembered my father through Henry, though he is not as talkative as Henry but a loving, caring, considerate in a comparable attitude. Fathers on a different family show their love and care differently and blends the family aura uniquely.
Andres Borromeo as Matthew Willows, Projects and delivers his voice well. Moves naturally around the stage as he acts. There is this moment when he left his bag and the bag almost fall, he quickly act at the same time speak perfectly. The young stage actor as I have observed as a whole have a great potential in the industry, just continue to listen to his mentors, this will surely make him a bigger better actor someday.
Liesl Batucan as Sue. Plays the role of a mother by heart. I think she has developed expectations on how her words should be delivered. She is also able to tap on the emotions required on the scene, talking to a bitter husband transitioning to a loving wife.
Becca Coates as Christine on the other hand not much to say because most of the time, her image conveys the act of the play. I hope I can see here more in a play which much talks like Andres Borromeo. The budget considered costume of Becca and Rachel does not cause any damage to the outcome of the play because they have similar body sizes.
Overall, They all successfully build the scene up to its climax. Congrats to Repertory Philippines.! Play runs until April 14 at Onstage Theater in Greenbelt 1. Watch out for “The Dresser” which runs from May 3 to 26, “The Quest for the Adarma” A colorfull English musical.
