Teatro Pinas Review : Noli Me Tangere The Opera 2019

Noli Me Tangere The Opera is a timeless masterpiece that every Filipino should be proud of. It’s artistry and narrative is comparable to the international one’s that some of us would watch abroad. Apart from that, it is part of you as a Filipino as it narrates the story of your home land and the torment that it suffered in the past.

It is also timely for the people who experienced false accusations and human rights violations. As it reminds us that we are not moving forward and learning from the lessons of the past. The history repeated itself. Our ancestors never failed to remind us on what to do and what to avoid, but we never learned.

Moving on to its artistic aspects, undoubtedly most of us knows the narrative or Noli Me Tangere, in this performance it has a different taste that made an impact not just on the viewers mind as well as their heart and soul. The masterpiece is awakening and making the youth aware in a remarkable manner.

It has a minimalist and yet detailed set design. The use of projection, never seen before in any version of Noli, made the performance more realistic and cinematic as it brings us to the exact place and time where the scene has happened. There are other elements that made the aesthetics of the stage more effective but the taste and choices of colours made everything fascinating and glamorous. The lights are well calculated ensuring to complement the set and the costume.

The collaboration of Jerry Sibal and Albert Figueras made the set more vibrant, the co-creation of their costumes are in full details and accurate based on its timeline. From the smallest to the biggest details of the costume had been exquisitely done.

The execution of the musical arrangement and the orchestra are well balanced and synchronised. It’s not boring and most of all, the songs are soulful. The performers sings from the heart. The chemistry between Narissa De Juan (Maria Clara) and Nohmer Nival (Juan Crisostomo Ibarra) was pleasing on stage.

However, Bernadette Mamauag (Sisa), stole the show, on the first part she doesn’t stand out that much, but as the story progress and as the scene gets close to her part slowly she’s dominating the stage. I know and I’m sure that people who have witnessed her performance would agree that her voice touched our hearts and our souls. I admit that I cried during her performance for three reasons, first she gave justice to role, second the quality of her voice is world class and most of all her performance was beyond her hundred percent; she gave it all during her scene. Because of her I would want to watch the opera again and again.

Same goes with Mari Yapjoco (Basilio), at his young age, he delivered the character well. As an audience I can feel his agony and longing for his mother. I can feel his burden through his voice and all the disappointments that he have as Basilio. I can feel the deep sense of frail and hopelessness which was accurately based from the noble. In a short span he completely delivered the message of his character.

Film Review : Just The 3 Of Us

My notes on Just The 3 Of Us: 1. The movie reminded me so much of this late 90's rom-com with Matthew Perry as a happy-go-lucky bachelor who had a one night stand with a sultry Salma Hayek in Vegas. She ended up pregnant, they got married, and then discovered each other's personalities while fixing family and work issues. It was called Fools Rush In and I would have asked you to rent it in a local Video City, but I think all of their stores closed ages ago. 2. In this version though, the girl CJ (Jennylyn Mercado) would rather stalk the potential father and be the emotional punching bag of Uno (John Lloyd Cruz) who had a bad temper (F-words everywhere!), an a-hole attitude ("So what? Buhay ko 'to. Kahit mag-swimming ako sa alak wala ka pakialam!"), crazy reasoning (he wanted to take care of CJ and the baby, but made her sleep on an uncomfortable sofa bed in the living room with poor ventilation), and a drinking problem that were all supposedly reasonab...
