Teatro Pinas: A CHILDREN’S TRAGEDY: ATENEO BLUE REPERTORY’S SPRING AWAKENING

Since 1991, the Ateneo Blue Repertory (blueREP) has staged a wide variety of acclaimed local and international shows. For its 27th Season, blueREP takes on the theme of Over and Across: Surpassing Limits which is all about going against the grain and challenging the standards and boundaries that have been set for us by society. For its finale, the premiere musical theater organization of the Ateneo is proud to present, Tony Award-winning musical: Spring Awakening.

Travel back to 19th century Germany, where the adults wield all the cards and the youth remain innocent. Bright-eyed and curious, naive Wendla Bergman and headstrong Melchior Gabor find comfort in each other as they navigate the rocky path of adolescence and discover their budding sexuality as it unfolds to the tune of an alt-rock score. With no one, not even their parents, willing to guide them, this group of young girls and boys face the consequences of their unchangeable reality, unguided mistakes and misinformed curiosity. Originally written as a German play Frank Wedekind and adapted into a musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, it tells of several tales of distress, defiance, and self-discovery, it is a dark and bold coming-of-age narrative that explores not only the joys and wonders of youth, but also its heartbreaks and tragedies.

First staged by the organization six years ago, its 2019 restaging aims to question the prevalent repression that continue to prevent the relationship between teenagers and adults by providing a visceral performance that appeals to a woke generation whose experience is limited by the filters of online media. By playing with shadows and silhouettes, present realities often ignored by society will finally be brought into the light for audiences to confront and reflect upon.

This coming-of-age story is helmed by theater actress and director Missy Maramara, with co-director and blueREP alumnae, Darrell Uy. Taking on the gritty score is composer and arranger Ejay Yatco as musical director, along with choreographer Mica Fajardo of Repertory Philippines. The production also features set design by Ohm David and lighting design by Miyo Sta. Maria.

The cast is primarily composed of blueREP’s homegrown talent such as Erika Rafael, Krystal Kane, and Jason Tan Liwag. It will also be featuring established talents like television and film actor Sandino Martin, who is best known for Changing Partners and Himala: Isang Musikal and theater actor Juancho Gabriel, who has up until recently been working with Atlantis Theatrical.

Spring Awakening will run from March 29 - April 14, 2019 at the Hyundai Hall Stage, Arete, Ateneo de Manila University. The show is rated R-13 as it tackles issues on sex, abortion, abuse, and suicide. Film Review : Just The 3 Of Us

My notes on Just The 3 Of Us: 1. The movie reminded me so much of this late 90's rom-com with Matthew Perry as a happy-go-lucky bachelor who had a one night stand with a sultry Salma Hayek in Vegas. She ended up pregnant, they got married, and then discovered each other's personalities while fixing family and work issues. It was called Fools Rush In and I would have asked you to rent it in a local Video City, but I think all of their stores closed ages ago. 2. In this version though, the girl CJ (Jennylyn Mercado) would rather stalk the potential father and be the emotional punching bag of Uno (John Lloyd Cruz) who had a bad temper (F-words everywhere!), an a-hole attitude ("So what? Buhay ko 'to. Kahit mag-swimming ako sa alak wala ka pakialam!"), crazy reasoning (he wanted to take care of CJ and the baby, but made her sleep on an uncomfortable sofa bed in the living room with poor ventilation), and a drinking problem that were all supposedly reasonab
