PETA Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival 2025 A Brave Exploration of Narrative Change

PETA kicks off the year with another exciting line-up of fresh and bold works with Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival, which brings new reimaginings of Filipino stories to the theater stage.

J-mee Katanyag, festival director and newly appointed company artistic director, has curated a collection of provocative original works that highlight the exploration of diverse performative and theater forms, including puppetry, movement, interactivity, and digital theater. These elements come together to reimagine traditional Filipino folklore, values, and contemporary issues, crafting narratives that traverse the past, engage with the present, and envision futures.

The festival's centerpiece is a remounting of Melvin Lee's critically acclaimed trilogy Kumprontasyon, as well as new and experimental works, improv performances, live music jams, and more, which will take place from February 6-23, 2025, at the PETA Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City.

The following events and shows are open to the public:

Main Theater Performances

“Kumprontasyon”

February 6-9, PETA-Phinma Theater

Described by critics as a “theatrical masterpiece,” Kumprontasyon explores unresolved historical and political events in three one-act plays: Allan Palileo’s Lakambini featuring Teroy Guzman and Sherry Lara, Guelan Luarca’s The Impossible Dream featuring Romnick Sarmenta and Ron Capinding, and Joshua Lim So’s A Color for Tomorrow featuring Missy Maramara, Adrienne Vergara, Gillian Vicencio, and Uzziel Delamide.

“Twin Bill”

February 14-15, PETA-Phinma Theater

Twin Bill features two revisited plays from Control + Shift 2024: Dominique La Victoria’s Kislap at Fuego, an enchanted love story set during the Philippine revolution, and Mixkaela Villalon’s Children of the Algo, which navigates the digital age and the ills of a technology-obsessed generation.

Film Review : Just The 3 Of Us

My notes on Just The 3 Of Us: 1. The movie reminded me so much of this late 90's rom-com with Matthew Perry as a happy-go-lucky bachelor who had a one night stand with a sultry Salma Hayek in Vegas. She ended up pregnant, they got married, and then discovered each other's personalities while fixing family and work issues. It was called Fools Rush In and I would have asked you to rent it in a local Video City, but I think all of their stores closed ages ago. 2. In this version though, the girl CJ (Jennylyn Mercado) would rather stalk the potential father and be the emotional punching bag of Uno (John Lloyd Cruz) who had a bad temper (F-words everywhere!), an a-hole attitude ("So what? Buhay ko 'to. Kahit mag-swimming ako sa alak wala ka pakialam!"), crazy reasoning (he wanted to take care of CJ and the baby, but made her sleep on an uncomfortable sofa bed in the living room with poor ventilation), and a drinking problem that were all supposedly reasonab...

Jason Dy release of his self-titled debut album which he classified as Pinoy R&B

“Wala na akong narinig. Wala na akong nakikita. Everything happened so fast.” Jason Dy’s still needs time to process the biggest moment of his life. The “The Voice of the Philippines” Season 2 champion had his eyes set on being the artist he has been dreaming to be for a long time – and it has finally come true.
