Manila Symphony Orchestra Launches 99th Season with "Music for Peace" Concert on May 24 at Aliw Theater


 The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO), Asia’s oldest and the Philippines' premier orchestra, proudly announces its first concert for the 2025-2026 season, titled "Music for Peace," set on May 24, 2025 (Saturday, 7:30 PM) at the iconic Aliw Theater, CCP Grounds, Pasay City.

Celebrating nearly a century of musical excellence, the MSO’s 99th season, themed "In Pursuit of Excellence: MSO Concert Series 2025–2026," marks a monumental journey leading up to its historic 100th anniversary in 2026. Partnered with Standard Insurance, this season highlights MSO's legacy of resilience, innovation, and cultural impact.

🎶 Concert Highlights:

  • Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 "From The New World"

  • Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 featuring Berlin-based Filipino violinist Emanuel John Villarin (EJ)

  • Conducted by MSO Music Director and internationally acclaimed maestro Marlon Chen

This concert also commemorates the 80th anniversary of MSO’s post-liberation concerts, celebrating music's role in healing and uniting communities after WWII.

Marlon Chen, known for his dynamic charisma and conducting across four continents, and rising star Emanuel John Villarin, a scholar at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, join forces for an unforgettable evening of music and artistry.

🎼 About the Repertoire:

  • Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 "From The New World": An homage to American spirituals and Native American music, reflecting Dvořák’s admiration for America’s musical roots.

  • Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61: One of the most beautiful and technically demanding pieces in the violin repertoire.

Film Review : Just The 3 Of Us

My notes on Just The 3 Of Us: 1. The movie reminded me so much of this late 90's rom-com with Matthew Perry as a happy-go-lucky bachelor who had a one night stand with a sultry Salma Hayek in Vegas. She ended up pregnant, they got married, and then discovered each other's personalities while fixing family and work issues. It was called Fools Rush In and I would have asked you to rent it in a local Video City, but I think all of their stores closed ages ago. 2. In this version though, the girl CJ (Jennylyn Mercado) would rather stalk the potential father and be the emotional punching bag of Uno (John Lloyd Cruz) who had a bad temper (F-words everywhere!), an a-hole attitude ("So what? Buhay ko 'to. Kahit mag-swimming ako sa alak wala ka pakialam!"), crazy reasoning (he wanted to take care of CJ and the baby, but made her sleep on an uncomfortable sofa bed in the living room with poor ventilation), and a drinking problem that were all supposedly reasonab...
