"Maple Leaf Dreams" by Benedict Mique: A Heartfelt Tale of Filipino Aspirations in Canada, Starring Kira Balinger and LA Santos
Benedict Mique, the acclaimed writer and director of the hit Netflix movie "Lolo & The Kid," which currently tops the streaming charts in the Philippines, is back with another compelling story set to hit cinemas this September. His latest film, "Maple Leaf Dreams," is already generating buzz as it promises to touch hearts and bring audiences to tears.
"Maple Leaf Dreams" stars rising talents Kira Balinger and LA Santos as a young couple determined to pursue better opportunities in Canada for the sake of their families back in the Philippines. Kira takes on the role of Molly, a determined young woman who dreams of building a secure and comfortable life for her parents and sister. LA portrays Macky, a restaurant manager in the Philippines seeking a more stable and fulfilling career abroad.
This film marks a significant milestone for Kira and LA, as it’s their first time headlining a major movie. To prepare for their roles, the two immersed themselves in the daily lives of blue-collar workers, spending days working in various settings like junk shops, fast food restaurants, offices, and grocery stores.
The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, featuring veteran actors Snooky Serna, Ricky Davao, and Joey Marquez. Their performances add depth to the narrative, highlighting the sacrifices and emotions involved in the pursuit of a better life.
"Maple Leaf Dreams" is a collaboration between 7K Entertainment, Lonewolf Films, and Star Magic, and is being distributed by Quantum Films. With this latest project, Direk Benedict once again proves his ability to craft stories that resonate deeply with Filipino audiences, blending heartfelt emotions with authentic experiences.
Sneak peeks of "Maple Leaf Dreams" shared on 7K Sounds' social media pages have already struck a chord with netizens. One particularly emotional scene shows Molly asking her family for permission to work in Canada. Her mother, played by Snooky Serna, is initially opposed, but her father, portrayed by Joey Marquez, surprises everyone by giving Molly not just his blessing but every penny he has saved.
"Teaser pa lang grabe yung patak ng luha ko," commented Clarissa Caraan, reflecting the sentiment of many who have seen the preview.
"Tumulo ang luha ko sa teaser pa lang. Ano pa kaya kung buong movie na?" echoed Je Ly Ca, while Keithlene Joy Alonzo Salvador added, "Tumulo na lang talaga ang luha ko... Sana ganyan ang mindset ng lahat ng tatay."
To authentically capture the Filipino immigrant experience, Direk Benedict spent months in Canada, interviewing kababayans and observing their daily lives. He fully immersed himself in the local culture, taking his son to school, dining in Filipino-owned restaurants, and engaging with Filipino communities. These experiences allowed him to appreciate the simple yet meaningful symbols of Canada, such as the iconic maple leaf.
"Life in Canada can be challenging, but it can also be happy," reflected Direk Benedict.
"Maple Leaf Dreams" is one of the finalists in the prestigious Sinag Maynila Film Festival, which will run from September 4-8, 2024. The film will then have its wide theatrical release starting September 25, 2024.
