Following the successful launch of Peter Zimmermann: Painting Rules, Material Instincts officially opened on 10 February 2026 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, expanding the dialogue on contemporary art in the Philippines. Conceived as a complementary exhibition, Material Instincts explores the evolving language of contemporary painting through materiality, abstraction, and process-driven practice. Curated by Bambina Olivares, the exhibition features leading Filipino artists Olivia d’Aboville, Marionne Contreras, Monica Delgado, and Michelle PĆ©rez, each presenting innovative approaches that challenge traditional notions of painting. From textile experimentation and yarn-based compositions to sculptural paint applications that transcend the pictorial plane, the exhibition foregrounds texture, dimensionality, and the physical transformation of materials. By slicing, layering, weaving, tufting, pleating, and folding their chosen media, the artists highlight the inherent plasticity of materials, positioning the medium itself as both subject and form. Material Instincts will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila through 30 April 2026, offering art enthusiasts, collectors, and cultural patrons a compelling look at post-painterly abstraction and the future of contemporary Filipino art.
