Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company of the Ateneo De Manila University, opened its 38th season: De/Constructing Narratives with a thought-provoking play titled Boy by Anna Ziegler. Cholo Barretto portrayed the title role and he lived up to the challenge very well. There was a clear-cut line between him as the real Adam Turner and what has been an imaginary/pretentious character Samantha.
Teroy Guzman as the psychologist Dr. Wendell Barnes was seemingly another character who has been foil . His passion for studying Adam has put both the former, the latter, and Adam's family in a very uncompromising position. And him being the plot twister was no question, made him a very effective actor in this story. It was impressive to see Cholo being the more knowledgeable one, not just by studying his role, but also the story that goes beyond Boy; the series of events that spanned three decades that prompted playwright to stage this narrative depicting a past-era taboo. Boy isn't just about knowing if you're a 'he' or 'she'.
The thought-provoking play has put its relevance to the present time is barely needed to address the still-ongoing-rampant discrimination among people whom still finds his or her identity – be it gender or not.
The first world premiere of Boy by Anna Ziegler is translated into Filipino by Guelan Varela-Luarca and directed by Ziegler. The play will run onstage at the Black Box Theater, Fine Arts Annex of Ateneo De Manila University, from October 19 to November 10.
