Tanghalang Pilipino Reveal the list of the 28th Theater Season for 2014-2015

For its 28th Theater Season (July 2014-March 2015), Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) adopts the theme DIS-EASE, and tackles the instability of the human personality which leads to psychological and social imperfections, illnesses, and tragedies.

It must be made clear, though, that the productions for this coming season are not meant to further dishearten, discourage and cause any more feelings of hopelessness, than we already experienced and are still experiencing due to the recent series of man-made and natural calamities. TP's intentions remain to be the artistic interpretation and reflection of life's complex human and social realities, human pathos and sufferings where great virtues and wisdom are usually hidden and which surface only in opportune times precisely to suppress the vices, to heal wounds and restore the wounded body soul and spirit.

KLEPTOMANIACS, July 11-27, 2014, Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, a rap-through musical by Layeta Bucoy, direction by Tuxqs Rutaquio, featuring a popular master rapper and the Actors Company. This musical, largely inspired by the Napoles scandal and the decline of the integrity of the national leadership will highlight the struggle of a group of young Filipino student leaders to check and police their own ranks against their own early inclination and natural lust for power and the strong temptation toward materialism, corruption, dishonesty and arrogance of power. The original Filipino musical, in rap, will feature a reality search for the future President of the country and the future senators and congressmen, hopefully, all of a different breed from all those in our midst right now..

OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck, August 15-September 7, 2014, Tanghalang Huseng Batute. This will will have an adaptation by Rody Vera, with Nanding Josef and Tuxqs Rutaquio, co-directing. This social realism on human beings' gnawing need to belong will show, not only an economically challenged man but also mentally-challenged child-like big guy, whose only consuming need is his common dream with his friend and protector to have a more decent, more humane and peaceful life in a simple farm that is all their own. The other characters have their own dreams for a better human existence and more secure sense of belonging.

(SANDOSENANG SAPATOS of Dr. Luis Gatmaitan, adapted for stage by Layeta Bucoy, music by Noel Cabangon and Jed Balsamo, direction by Tuxqs Rutaquio, will have special performances for the August 26-29, 2014 CCP Next Generation Festival, Tanghalang Huseng Batute)

YUN NA NGA ! ( KUNG YUN NA NGA ! ), September 26-October 19, 2014, Tanghalang Huseng Batute, a Jerry Respeto translation of Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello's Cosi E Se Vi Pare. An expressionistic parable that explores the relativity of truth, the vanity and necessity of illusions. This will be an ensemble work that will underscore our tendencies to live lives far beyond our real lives, farthest from our real, true selves and worth. This will be directed by Floy Quintos.

PAHIMAKAS NG ISANG AHENTE, a Rolando Tinio translation of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. November 28-December 14, 2014. Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino. Direction is by Chris Millado. This play addresses loss of identity, an obsession to keep clinging to the old glorious days gone by, a man's inability to accept change within himself and in the bigger new world his tired, old self now lives in. The play underscores denial, contradiction and order vs. disorder.

LARO SA PANGANIB, an Elmer Gatchalian's translation/adaptation of Pierre Choderlos da Laclos' Dangerous Liaisons. February-March, 2015. Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino. Direction by Tuxqs Rutaquio. A most engaging dissection of one woman's obsession to possess everything she desires to satisfy her limitless psycho-physical needs. She uses the weaker characters for her lust; some succumb to her wiles, but other more virtuous souls succeed in suppressing her venomous vice.

Film Review : Just The 3 Of Us

My notes on Just The 3 Of Us: 1. The movie reminded me so much of this late 90's rom-com with Matthew Perry as a happy-go-lucky bachelor who had a one night stand with a sultry Salma Hayek in Vegas. She ended up pregnant, they got married, and then discovered each other's personalities while fixing family and work issues. It was called Fools Rush In and I would have asked you to rent it in a local Video City, but I think all of their stores closed ages ago. 2. In this version though, the girl CJ (Jennylyn Mercado) would rather stalk the potential father and be the emotional punching bag of Uno (John Lloyd Cruz) who had a bad temper (F-words everywhere!), an a-hole attitude ("So what? Buhay ko 'to. Kahit mag-swimming ako sa alak wala ka pakialam!"), crazy reasoning (he wanted to take care of CJ and the baby, but made her sleep on an uncomfortable sofa bed in the living room with poor ventilation), and a drinking problem that were all supposedly reasonab
