Tanghalang Pilipino Present : Melanie (Let's Talk about HIV and AIDS)

MELANIE tells the story of gay parlorista who became the subject of gossip after his death, due to an AIDS-related complication. At his funeral-turned-disco party, his friends and colleagues gather to discuss the horrors of ‘becoming like Melanie’, showing a fear of infection, which is caused by sheer ignorance on the virus and the disease. Each one has a story to tell; and each one has a fear to conquer. In the end, everyone is left with an eye-opener: we are only afraid of what we don’t understand. Using Forum Theater as a device, the production effectively inculcates important information about HIV and AIDS to the audience by involving them into the performance through an interactive ‘breaking of the fourth wall’. This way, audience feel that they are part of the process, and at a greater extent, are involved in creating an effective solution.

Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go, over the years, has successfully prepared the country’s biggest independent record label to withstand the challenges of the ever-changing landscape of the local recording industry. Because of this achievement, Joey Concepcion’s GoNegosyo has named Kathleen as one of the 50 Entrepreneurs of Passion. Her story is included in a special limited edition book with the subtitle “How Big Dreams and Good Ideas Became Great Businesses.”  In the commemorative book, Kathleen recalled how Universal Records have readied itself in the evolution of music formats in the country – from vinyl to cassettes to CDs to digital.  Kathleen also admitted that this inescapable evolution is really challenging, but according to her, one truth keeps her faith in the industry – “Music will never disappear and Filipinos will always be music lovers.”

Cinema One Originals Festival opening night lived up to its “intense” theme

 2014 Cinema One Originals Festival opening night lived up to its “intense” theme. The event was intense as hundreds flocked to Trinoma Cinema 7 to catch director Elwood Perez’s 51st feature film, “Esoterika: Maynila.” Written by Elwood Perez in collaboration with columnist Jessica Zafra, “Esoterika: Maynila” follows the story of Mario, a restaurant worker who transforms himself into a literary artist. The cast are Ronnie Liang, Boots Anson Roa, Vince TaƱada, Carlos Celdran, Snooky Serna, Lance Raymundo, Jon Hall, and Cecile Guidote Alvarez. Perez says that his new film is inspired by his youth and personal experiences.

Ballet Philippines Present : Alice Reyes "Cinderella"

The quintessential rags to riches fairy tale as retold by National Artist Alice Reyes will be staged anew by Ballet Philippines from November 28 to December 7 at Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater). This lively and humorous production will bring much laughter and romance to the holiday season. First staged in 1981, Alice Reyes' “Cinderella” is a joyful mixture of kings, princes, fairies, and animals set to a collage of music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who composed some of the world's greatest ballet music. Although intended as a ballet for children, both young and young-at-heart audiences are sure to be enthralled by this lighthearted production. After a successful production of Han Ong's "Middle Finger" last August, the company now focuses its attention on Glenn Sevilla Mas's "Rite of Passage: Sa Pagtubu kang Tahud (An adaptation of a Kinaray-a short story by Maria Milagros Geremia Lachica). The play was first produced by Tanghalang Pilipino for the Virgin Labfest, the Cultural Center of the Philippines' annual festival of new plays in 2005. Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company of the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila University, celebrates its 36th season with the theme “Navigating Identities”. To articulate this, the company will stage plays that explore man’s need to find himself and his place in the world.

EL FILIBUSTERISMO the novel of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal written by noted playwright Jomar Fleras narrates the return of the protagonist of Noli Me Tangere, Crisostomo Ibarra, under the guise of the wealthy jeweler named Don Simoun. Fresh from his critically-acclaimed performance as the sublime paralytic in “Ang Huling Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini,”  ROEDER CAMANAG shall once again reprise his role in Gantimapala Theater’s EL FILIBUSTERISMO. The role is being essayed by multi-talented actor Roeder CamaƱag who is stepping into this role for the 7th time for Gantimpala Theater Foundation. His foray as Don Simoun started in 1998 and then again in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Indeed, Roeder’s celebration of his 27th year as an artist in the entertainment and theater industry is being etched  with very significant roles in the legitimate stage. He also won the 2013 Aliw Awards for  Best Actor (Musical) for “Stageshow” under Tanghalang Pilipino.
