Theater Review : Egg Theater Company' Schism

Manila, Philippines- Last February 21, Sunday, at Pineapple Lab I was invited to watch Schism an adaptation of Le Misanthrope ou I’Atrabilaire Amoureux of Moliere; playwright and directed by Mr. George de Jesus III. Schism is about a specific division of a group that involves a mere reality of the current setup in a theatrical world where there is full of false flattery just to avoid giving the rude remarks of the moment. The play starts without its usual introduction where Tuxqs Rutaquio sat in front of the stage while Angeli Bayani is loudly chatting with the audience. It just came into my sense that the play already start when the two character start conversing. Even though the play involves a lot of inside joke from the theatrical world I did really enjoy the story because it covers not only the reality of the theatre realm but it also mirror the general problem of being millennial which the play refer to as being  “plastik”. I may say that Schism put the theatre bar on high a

Egg Theater Company's production of SCHISM for ‪Fringe Manila

Venue: Pineapple Lab Appropriated from Moliere’s “Le Misanthrope Ou L'Atrabilaire Amoureux”, the play directed by Geroge de Jesus III,  is a comedic satire that explores how hypocrisy and pretension can polarise and divide artists. After creating a brutally honest theater production that has created a schism in his community, a playwright finds himself at a crossroads in finding what art really means: an expression of his own ideals or a reflection of what society expects.

Si Dante At Si Max’s is a call for Filipinos and the world to keep on finding beauty in everyday life.

December 17, 2015 marks the exclusive screening of four short films by renowned director Brillante Mendoza. Each proudly Filipino film captures ordinary people who have extraordinary stories inside the four walls of Max’s Restaurant. Two proudly Filipino icons come as one to turn life’s minute moments to some of our fondest memories. On its 70th birthday Max’s Restaurant collaborated with award-winning director Brillante “Dante” Mendoza to make this vision not only a tangible, but more importantly, a heartfelt and lasting reality.  The best part is that Direk Dante and his team handpicked these stories straight from people whose lives were made more colourful and worthwhile by The House That Fried Chicken Built. In the first short film, Tagpuan, Mendoza tackles how true love transcends the test of time: An elderly woman faithfully shares her special birthday meal to the love of her life in their unlikely tagpuan.

Theater Review : Tanghalang Pilipino' Mabining Mandirigma, A Steampunk Musical (Why Mabini is a Girl?)

This is the question that is keeps recurring into my mind while I watch the theatrical play "Mabining Mandirigma". Mabini as derive from the last name of Apolinario Mabini, it can also be a word play from the Tagalog word "Mabini" which means modest that depicts as the dominant traits of an early Filipina. On the other hand, Mandirigma which means warrior, a defender that fights for the what is rightfully his/her.

Pour Out What’s Special: The Perfect Pre-Valentine Night

The perfect Valentine treat to all music aficionado and wine and art connoisseurs kicked off last February 13 at the Novellino Winery in Canlubang, Calamba City, Laguna. Pour Out What’s Special is a scene not only for the experts of music and the arts, but also for all fans of the OPM, especially the independent music, fine arts and fine wine. This “classy” kind of gig was made possible by Novellino Wines and Doc-Def Productions in cooperation with Fringe MNL. According to Chris Quimbo, the COO and President of Novellino Wines, he personally believes that local products are at par with imported ones. Unfortunately, Filipinos have long believed otherwise. This connotation brought by colonial mentality sets aside local products over imported ones and this does not solely affect the local wine industry. The same goes with local music. Thus, the birth of the best association of fine music and wine that Filipinos should taste---OPM and Novellino, because local wine and music can bring th

Theater Review : Red Turnip' Constellations

Redturnip Theater Artistic Staff and the Cast of Constellations What if. Perspectives. Parallel Universe. Three different concepts. Each with individual theme. Seamlessly intertwined in a story that would challenge one's view about love (and everything else in between). This is what Red Turnip's season ender is all about. Constellations, penned by Nick Payne, invites the audience to journey with the characters (perfectly brought to life by acclaimed theater thespians Cris Villongco and JC Santos) across a myriad of what-ifs. This is a love story that perfectly mixes science and intimacy.

Film Review : Love Is Blind

My notes on Love Is Blind: 1. Could a hottie like Derek Ramsay actually fall in love with a nottie like Kiray Celis? If we were to believe this movie, the answer would be a definite no. Unless of course one used the power of gayuma, because a conventionally unattractive woman has no chance of being loved by her Prince Charming without any dark magic involved. That was the single joke here stretched for an hour and and forty minutes. 2. In this movie, Derek named Wade actually had a beautiful girlfriend in Maggie (Solenn Heussaff), an unrefined artist who gets a bit wild inside a club. She was so nasty that she actually wiped her wet armpits in public because well, nobody's perfect (except for Solenn of course, an actress so game that she would do any silly thing and still end up looking endearing). In one scene, he asked her to undergo crystal peeling because he was embarrassed to bring her in his high school reunion ("Kasi hindi pantay ang kulay mo"). Seriously?

Direk Brillante Ma. Mendoza was exposed at the launch of ' Si Dante at si Max'

Serbis. Kinatay. Kubrador. Lola. These are but some of the movies that made the name for Director Brillante Ma. Mendoza. Aside from receiving various praises and accolades from different film festivals around the world, these movies left a distinctive mark in the Philippine movie industry. All of them showcased the rather  obvious, but oftentimes neglected themes that are so close to every Filipinos hearts, so close we become all too familiar with it. Poverty, corruption, the filthy, the dark side of Filipino reality. these are trademarks normally equated with the name Brillante Mendoza. But at the start of 2016, another side of the filmmaker that is Direk Dante was exposed at the launch of ' Si Dante at si Max', a collection of 4 heartwarming stories that embody the values of every Juan and shared by the Filipino brand that has been trusted for years for it's succulent fried chicken--Max's Restaurant. held at SM Aura's Cinema 1, the special screening was att
